I Want To Be The Retard

19 Feb

So it was a while ago that I went out to eat with Jeff Wysong and Mike Dalsey, some guys from work at Roundbox Global, and they asked me what I wanted to do with my life. They laughed when I answered with what ended up being the title of this article. Now, I don’t want you to get the wrong idea. In no way am I being racist, sexist, or any other type of *ist that you can think of, so let me break it down for you.

My parents, especially my dad, always told me to go to school for as long as I could. Once I get an undergraduate degree, I should just keep going and get another one. That way, when I graduated I would have so much knowledge and so much experience that I would land a killer job working for as little people as possible. So now that I’ve been at college for 5 years, I’ve come to realize exactly what they were talking about.

How many of you have bosses that do things you think

  1. are stupid;
  2. make no sense;
  3. cause more problems; or
  4. all of the above?

I’ve worked in some places (Roundbox is not one of these) in the past where the management was marginal at best and the bureaucracy kept anyone from liking their job. A lot of the stuff they give you to do is mostly fixing other people’s mistakes. People who don’t care what mistakes they’ve made, just that they get their six-figure check in the mail or in the bank account and continue to pass along their responsibilities to other people.

Those are the people that I don’t want to work for, but want to be.

I want to be the person that banks on other people working around the clock to please me.

I want to be that guy.
